Microsoft launched How-Old.net service which can guess a person’s age and gender by a photo. A user simply uploads a photo containing faces to the site and system instantly returns probable age and gender of persons that photo. Buy used photo camera on JiJi.ng
The service is based upon machine learning and facial recognition technologies as well as Bing searching tools. One can try service capabilities either by uploading own photos or by using pictures found by Bing on the Internet.
Initially the site was created as a small and unpretentious experiment. Microsoft provided 50 users with a link to the site without actually expecting any rush, but what happened next was quite the opposite.
To Developers’ surprise the site was visited by over 35 thousand users from all over the globe just within several hours. Interesting fact: about 29 thousand visitors were from Turkey.
Facial recognitions algorithms leave much to be desired. The system makes a lot of mistakes and can confuse toys, game characters or mythical creatures with people. Besides, after testing How-Old.net for some time one may notice that results pretty much depend on a facial expression, lightingconditions, angle and overall picture quality.
At the moment the practical value of the service is questionable, though it often gives funny results
and is quite capable of raising one’s spirits.
